With a massive first day take of $18.6 million in 3,661 theaters Fox’s Taken 2 starring Liam Neeson tops Friday’s box office derby and a potential opening weekend in the near $50 million range! That’s almost double the debut weekend of 2009’s Taken which opened with $24.7 million. In second place in its second weekend is Sony’s Hotel Transylvania with $6.5 million on Friday and a scarily strong gross of $23 to $25 million expected for the weekend and a total through Sunday in the low to mid $70 million range.
Third place on Friday belongs to the newly expanded Pitch Perfect from Universal which adds 2,446 theaters this weekend for a total of 2,781 and $4.9 million for Friday and $11.8 million to date and a gross in the mid teens for the weekend. Sony’s Looper adds another $3.5 million on Friday and an expected $10 to $11 million for the weekend and a 10 day total in the high $30 million range. Rounding out the Top 5 is Disney’s Frankenweenie in IMAX and 3-D with $3.268 million for Friday and an expected Friday through Sunday total in the low teens.
