Happy Friday, Hollywooders! And it’s a very happy Friday for Lil Nas X fans!
Lil Nas X has released a new single and accompanying music video off his upcoming album Montero.
The track, called “SUN GOES DOWN,” features Lil Nas X softly singing over a sweet guitar loop and trap beat that was sampled from ian dior’s “Holding On.”
The singer portrays a younger version of himself in the lyrics and touches on the loneliness and struggle with identity that he felt in his youth. However, Lil Nas X is able to become the person he always needed when he was a teen and uplift his younger self throughout the song.
A conversation with his past self
“SUN GOES DOWN” is such an empowering song for both Lil Nas X and listeners. The track acts as a way for the singer to communicate directly with his high school self. Throughout the chorus, we are flashed back to 2017 when Lil Nas X was struggling with suicidal thoughts.
The chorus repeats the lines: “I wanna run away / Don’t wanna lie, I don’t want a life / Send me a gun and I’ll see the sun.”
However, present day Lil Nas X acts as a beacon of hope during the song’s post-chorus: “I know that you want to cry / But it’s much more to life than dying / Over your past mistakes / And people who threw dirt on your name”
Additionally, the sole verse features a similar pattern. Early in the verse Lil Nas X reveals that he struggled with his identity as a teen singing: “Always thinkin’, ‘Why my lips so big?’ / Was I too dark? Can they sense my fears? / These gay thoughts would always haunt me.”
As the verse continues, Lil Nas X lets listeners know that he has found happiness and acceptance: “And I’m happy by the way / That I made that jump, that leap of faith / I’m happy that it all worked out for me / I’ma make my fans so proud of me.”
“SUN GOES DOWN” music video was co-directed by Lil Nas X himself
In addition to dropping the hot track, Lil Nas X also released a music video for “SUN GOES DOWN” that shares the song’s themes.
The video was written and co-directed by the singer with Psycho Films handling additional direction. The “SUN GOES DOWN” music video is simple in scope yet huge in impact.
Lil Nas X opens the video as his present self swiping through portals that will take him to different times in his life. He settles on a 2017 version of himself and we are transported to a Taco Bell where we follow the singer’s teenage life.
We, and the 2021 version of Lil Nas X, act as fly on the wall as the teenage version of the singer struggles with identity and acceptance. However, the emotional video concludes with Lil Nas X offering support to his younger self who proceeds to dance freely at the high school prom.
