Pirated “Potter” videos go on sale

Video CDs of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone went on sale
in Beijing, China and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Monday, only days after
the film was released in the U.S., according to Bloomberg News.

The wire
service quoted Sam Ho, assistant director at the Hong Kong office of the
MPAA, as saying, “This is a nightmare. Within a week, all of Asia will
be flooded with illegal copies of Harry Potter.”

Ho indicated
that the original video was probably taken with a pocket-sized video
camera in a U.S. theater, then sent overseas over the Internet to a
production plant where it was copied onto VCDs and then distributed to
sidewalk merchants.
