The sci-fi thriller Jumper, starring Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson, leaped to the top of the North American box office this President’s Day weekend with a four-day total of $31.7 million.
Jumper was followed by newcomers The Spiderwick Chronicles, a fantastical kid-lit adaptation starring Freddie Highmore, which opened in second with a four-day total of $24.4 million, and the high-kickin’ Step Up 2 the Streets which debuted in third place with $21.5 million. The romantic comedy Definitely, Maybe, starring Ryan Reynolds, premiered in fifth place with $11.4 million.
The Top 12 movies took in $139.7 million over four days, down 16.72 percent from last year’s $167.8 million on the same weekend last year but up 32.08 percent from last weekend’s total of $89.7 million.
The Top Three films at the box office this time last year: Sony’s Ghost Rider, which opened at No. 1 with $52 million in 3,619 theaters, averaging $12,542 per theater; Buena Vista’s Bridge to Terabithia, which debuted in second place with $28.5 million in 3,139 theaters, averaging $7,188 per theater; and Paramount’s Norbit, which dropped to third place in its second week of release with $19.9 million in 3,138 theaters, averaging $5,346 per theater (Click here to read last year’s box office report).
