The woolly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers have it! Despite scathing reviews, Roland Emmerich’s epic 10,000 B.C. opened at the top of the North American box office this weekend with $35.7 million.
“Those movies opened up in the summer. We’re very strong for this time of year,” Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros. told The Associated Press. Fellman added Emmerich‘s films tend to do better internationally, including The Day After Tomorrow, which topped out at $186.7 million domestically and did nearly twice that business overseas.
Other newcomers this weekend fared well. The Disney family comedy College Road Trip, starring Raven Symone and Martin Lawrence, debuted in second place with $14 million, while the bank-heist actioner The Bank Job, starring Jason Statham, opened in fifth place with $5.7 million.
The Top 12 movies took in $91.8 million, down 34 percent from the same weekend last year, which saw 300 open with $71 million.
