Jennifer Lopez accepts Turkmenistan birthday gig was a mistake

Jennifer Lopez has learned her lesson after failing to do her research about alleged human rights abuses in Turkmenistan before agreeing to perform at a birthday concert for the country’s president earlier this summer (13). The On the Floor hitmaker flew into the Central Asian nation to help Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov celebrate turning 56, and she wished him a happy birthday after hitting the stage.
However, her participation in the gig drew criticism from campaigners at the Human Rights Foundation, who claim Berdymukhamedov oversees one of the most repressive regimes in the world.
Lopez’s representative defended the superstar at the time, insisting the singer/actress was unaware of the controversial issues and would not have performed had she known about the allegations beforehand.
Lopez now accepts that she made a mistake by signing up for the concert, but she is adamant she has learned from the oversight.
She tells Cosmopolitan magazine, “I know that being seen as a role model means taking responsibility for all my actions. I am human, and of course, sometimes I make mistakes. But I promise that when I fall, I get back up. When I am wrong, I will learn the lesson and move on to face other challenges. For me, that’s what creating your own life is. Doing your best work while being your best self.”
