Ebert says digital projection could be a boost for small indies

Writing from Cannes in Britain’s Guardian newspaper, critic Roger Ebert suggests that digital projection could be a boon — indeed, perhaps the savior — of independent filmmaking. “If films were supplied [to theaters] on cheap high-definition discs, the same title could play simultaneously in 50 cities, with a national publicity campaign,” Ebert writes. “Even as an opponent of digital projection of big-screen, mainstream movies, I can see how this would help the indies sneak around the multiplex gridlock.”
