The Tony Awards Committee Announces Second Round of Eligibility Rulings

Each year, the Tony Awards Administration Committee determines which productions and individuals are eligible for awards consideration. This is done through a series of eligibility rulings that are released throughout the season. The second round of eligibility rulings for the 2022-2023 season has just been announced, and it includes some exciting news for Broadway fans.

As of this week, the Tony Awards eligibility cut-off date for the 2022-2023 season is April 27, 2023.  After that, nominations for the 2023 Tony Awards will be announced on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

What are The Tony Eligibility Rules?

Just like the Oscars, there are rules and regulations that govern what shows are eligible to be nominated for a Tony Award. These rules and regulations are determined by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. Now, the committee is comprised of appointed representatives that rotate each every three years.

This rotating committee contains about 50 theatre professionals who see every new Broadway show so they can vote on the nominations. It’s also worth noting that the Tony Awards Administration Committee’s eligibility rulings are subject to change as the season progresses.

Something you may not know is that only Broadway productions showing in Manhattan are eligible for Tony Nominations. Touring Productions and Off Broadway productions are not eligible to be nominated for a Tony Award.

Productions may receive additional rulings, such as this week when a second ruling was announced. This means that shows may be deemed eligible for consideration in different categories as the season unfolds. Additionally, new productions that have not yet been announced may have become eligible for awards consideration.

The Eligibility for the 2022-2023 Award Season

During the first round of announcements, it was confirmed that Fat Ham, A Doll’s House, and more were considered eligible.

The productions discussed this time were Pictures From Home, Between Riverside and Crazy, A Doll’s House, Parade, Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, Bad Cinderella and Sweeney Todd.

Some of the biggest news involves exciting productions that hit broadway this year.  Michael Yeargan and 59 Productions are now jointly considered eligible for the Best Scenic Design of a Play category for Pictures From Home. Also, Bad Cinderella, Linedy Genao is now considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical category.
