Continued cutbacks at ABC News and the recent decision to move 20/20 from its long-established slot on Friday nights to Wednesdays (and to take it off the air entirely during the football season beginning in November) represent “something of a new reality” to the news division, ABC anchor Peter Jennings told Monday’s New York Times. “The only thing everyone [at ABC News] wants to say to [Disney Chairman] Michael [Eisner] is that this is something of a public trust and we want them to continue to value what I call a public service,” Jennings added. The Times, citing executives familiar with the situation, reported that the decision regarding 20/20 was delivered to ABC News executives as a “fait accompli.”
