Cannes’ Cancan

The 54th annual Cannes International Film Festival opened Wednesday night with a screening of Moulin Rouge, accompanied by an appearance on the red carpet of star Nicole Kidman, saluted by a contingent of models dressed as cancan dancers. The film was greeted enthusiastically by the audience, which applauded the musical numbers and stood during the closing credits to clap along with the music. Reviews of the film were mixed, with many praising the musical numbers but knocking the script and director Baz Luhrmann‘s radical staging. The opening of the festival was accompanied by the opening of the Cannes Film Market. Despite flagging attendance by dot-com companies this year, Market executive director Jerome Paillard predicted that attendance would set a record.
