Fox chief confronts reality

Speaking to television critics in Pasadena Tuesday, Fox TV Chairman Sandy Grushow warned that the industry could face problems down the road if it relies too heavily on “reality” programming. “In the long run, networks that use unscripted programming to mask their inability to create new scripted hits–they’re going to fail,” Grushow said, adding: “We know. It happened to Fox.” Grushow presumably was referring to such debacles as Who Wants to Marry a Multi-millionaire? Alien Autopsy and When Animals Attack. He also indicated that Fox is not turning its back on such programming. (It’s bringing back Temptation Island next fall.) “Let’s face it,” Grushow told the TV reporters. “No network can compete in today’s marketplace without it.”
