Appearing to depart from the strict code of prerelease secrecy that surrounds Steven Spielberg movies, costar Jude Law has discussed his role in A.I. with Premiere magazine, revealing that the android character, named Gigolo Joe, was created to “pleasure” women. Although the character appears human, Law said, he had to spend three hours a day in make-up. “It’s a very simple effect,” he said, “but not one that’s ever been used before. I look like rubber, like I’m spray-painted. But you can always see me, and I can do everything. I’m not Max Headroom.” The message of the film, said Law, “is that if we do create artificial life, we will be responsible for them, we will be their gods.”
