NBC gets Bridget Jones’s Diary rights

NBC has purchased the broadcast television rights to Miramax Films/Universal’s romantic comedy Bridget Jones’s Diary. The network will get three airings of the film beginning December 2003. The licensing fee will depend on the film’s box office performance, to which sources say could be as much as $8 million to $9 million. In the first 17 days of release, the film has grossed $36.2 million in the United States and $8.2 million on its opening weekend in its homeland of London. This is the second Miramax romantic comedy with European taste acquired by a U.S. broadcast network, following last month’s sale of Chocolat to CBS.
