The 2023 Tony Awards will have a new home this year. Instead of Radio City Music Hall, the award show celebrating Broadway’s biggest stars will take place at the United Palace in Washington Heights.
The United Palace is a historic theatre in Washington Heights
The theatre had its start in 1930, where vaudeville shows and movies would play for the New York City population. Designer of Radio City Music Hall, architect Thomas Lamb, worked with decorative specialist Harold Rambusch to build and create the United Palace. The theatre includes more than 3,500 seats, making it the fourth largest theatre in the city of Manhattan. Now, the theatre opens up its doors for live performances, concerts, film shoots and festivals.

President and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, Heather Hitchens, and President of The Broadway League, Charlotte St. Martin, shared their excitement in a joint statement.
“We are excited to bring the Tony Awards to the historic United Palace for the first time. As we celebrate the best of this Broadway season and 76 years of the Tony Awards, we look forward to ushering in a new golden age for the show from this majestic, golden age theatre.”
The United Palace is home for artist Lin Manuel Miranda
The Hamilton creator and star grew up in the Washington Heights area. There, he spent a lot of his time at the United Palace. One of his musicals, In the Heights, actually takes place in the neighborhood of the theatre. In 2013, Miranda began a fundraising campaign that helped the United Palace with new events and movie screenings.
When is the 2023 Tony Awards
The awards will air live on CBS and stream live or on-demand on Paramount+ on June 11, 2023. The award show will allow productions opening by April 27, 2023 to be eligible for this year’s awards. The Tony Awards will announce nominations on May 2, 2023.
