‘Oh Mary’ Broadway Welcomes a New First Lady: Jinkx Monsoon Arrives This August

When the Tony-winning dark comedy Oh Mary landed on Broadway last season, the show’s deliriously off-kilter portrait of Mary Todd Lincoln quickly became the buzziest ticket on 45th Street.

Now the Lyceum Theatre is about to feel an aftershock: two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race champion Jinkx Monsoon will step into the corset beginning August 4, succeeding Tituss Burgess for an eight-week stint that ends September 27.

Jinkx Monsoon: From Pirates! to Oh Mary on Broadway

Jinkx Monsoon, currently wrapping a scene-stealing turn in Pirates! The Penzance Musical, called the invitation “one of the best, funniest, most energizing things I’ve seen in my life” accroding to Playbill, and promised to honor the anarchic spirit playwright-star Cole Escola built into the role. She also noted the personal milestone: as a transfeminine performer, “I thought I had to choose to be an actor or be a trans person… these trailblazers proved otherwise.”

Oh Mary! follows a cabaret-obsessed Mary Todd in the weeks before Lincoln’s assassination, mixing camp humor with wicked social commentary. The Broadway transfer earned Tonys for Escola (the first out nonbinary performer to take an acting prize) and director Sam Pinkleton, and it’s now selling strong through an extended closing date of January 4, 2026.
