You don’t have to live in Portland to appreciate Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein’s take on the city. Portlandia’s sketches portray all types of people – from hipsters to hippies – in a way that pokes fun at the nonsense but also embraces it. The show’s fifth season premieres in January on IFC, but here are some of the series’ best clips to tide you over.
1. Feminist Bookstore
Any scenes with Toni and Candace at the Women and Women First bookstore are amazing. This one in particular is great because it features them giving major shade to Aubrey Plaza.
2. Black Out
There’s a black out at Peter and Nance’s Bed & Breakfast and an Australian named Birdman (Bill Hader) takes charge. Bonus: Peter can’t pronounce “Birdman” …or any other name.
3. Pasta Rehab
Peter tries to give up pasta for the winter and ends up in downward pasta spiral. We feel you, bro.
4. Phone Plan
Guest-star Kamail Nanjiani perfectly captures every phone store worker you’ve ever encountered. “The ‘This Changes Everything Plan’ is what you want then.”
5. Battlestar Galactica
Been there, binge-watched that. This is what it’s like to marathon an addicting show. They only slightly exaggerated the experience.
6. The Best Part is Going Home
This is exactly what going to a concert is like once you’re over the age of 25. Dead on.
7. Spoiler Alert
Is our TV/movie-obsessed society way too consumed with avoiding spoilers? Spoiler alert: Yes.
8. Brunch Village
This satire on brunch’s outrageous popularity is oh-so-relevant. It isn’t going to stop up from going to brunch though because brunch food is delicious.
9. Grover
Yuppie parents try way too hard to get their kid Grover into some private school. The poor kid has no clue how crazy his parents are…yet.
10. Put a Bird On It
We dare you to go into any boutique and not find at least one item with a bird on it.
