Actor Carroll O’Connor, best known for his role as
Archie Bunker on the 1970s television series All in the Family, died of a heart attack Thursday at Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, Calif., Reuters reports. The heart attack was brought on by complications from diabetes. Mr. O’Connor had a toe amputated last year because of circulatory problems and underwent coronary bypass surgery in 1989. He was 76.

Mr. O’Connor‘s long career in show business included both stage and film roles, but it is his grumpy, bigoted character Archie Bunker that captured audiences. Based on a popular British series Till Death Do Us Part, All in the Family ran on CBS for eight seasons and was then revamped under a new title, Archie Bunker’s Place. The show also starred Rob Reiner, Jean Stapleton and Sally Struthers.

After the series ended, Mr. O’Connor starred in several TV series, including In the Heat of the Night, and made several guest appearances on Mad About You from 1996 through 1999. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000. His final screen appearance was the romantic comedy Return to Me.
