Cameron Diaz is officially back on the big screen, and she’s not slowing down. The Hollywood icon, 53, is set to star in the upcoming Netflix action-comedy Bad Day, which begins filming this fall across New Jersey and New York. Local casting calls are already underway, giving fans in the area a chance to join the production as background performers.

Cameron Diaz’s Return to Acting in Bad Day
Diaz was one of the most recognizable faces of the 1990s, with memorable roles in The Mask, There’s Something About Mary, and Being John Malkovich. She went on to headline blockbusters like Charlie’s Angels, The Holiday, Bad Teacher, and voiced Princess Fiona in the beloved Shrek franchise.
After stepping back from acting following 2014’s Annie, Diaz shifted her focus to family life, marrying Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden and welcoming two children, Raddix (2019) and Cardinal (2024).
Her official Hollywood comeback began earlier this year with Netflix’s Back in Action, where she reunited with Jamie Foxx. The film quickly became Netflix’s sixth most-watched movie of all time, amassing over 5.2 billion viewing minutes.
What Bad Day Is About
Bad Day follows Diaz as a single mother trying to keep a promise to her daughter while experiencing the worst day imaginable. Written by Laura Solon (Office Christmas Party, Let It Snow), the story has been compared to a comedic spin on Joel Schumacher’s 1993 cult classic Falling Down.
Jake Szymanski (Jury Duty, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates) is directing, with Beau Bauman producing under Good One Productions. Solon and Mark Moran are executive producers, marking the third collaboration between Solon and Bauman.
Casting Calls for New Jersey Extras
Most of the filming will take place in New Jersey, with Grant Wilfley Casting seeking extras over 18 — especially those who own bicycles — for scenes scheduled in late September and early October.

New Jersey continues to grow as a production hub for Netflix, with Jennifer Lopez’s The Last Mrs. Parrish and Dan Levy’s series Bad Mistakes also filming in the state.
Beyond Bad Day, Diaz has several projects lined up, including Jonah Hill’s Apple TV+ film Outcome and her much-anticipated return as Princess Fiona in Shrek 5, set for release in 2027.
