Remembering Clifton Oliver, Broadway Actor Known For ‘The Lion King’ and ‘In The Heights’

The renowned Broadway actor, Clifton Oliver, celebrated for his role as Simba in The Lion King and Benny in In the Heights passed away on August 2, 2023, at the age of 47. He passed away early Wednesday according to a loving post from his sister Roxy Hall. 

Clifton Oliver: A Glimpse into His Life

Born on December 3, 1975, in Jacksonville, Florida, Oliver’s journey started at the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in his hometown. His talent soon saw him performing in regional theatre before he set his sights on Broadway in 2010.

His career took off as he was cast in the ensemble of Wicked and understudying for Fiyero. He also played Benny alongside Jordin Sparks in Lin Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights.

Oliver’s first experience as Simba was during the Las Vegas rendition of The Lion King. This role was a stepping stone for Oliver, as he would later join the musical’s national tour, culminating in his widely acclaimed performance as Simba on Broadway until August 2011.

Post The Lion King, Oliver remained a stalwart of the stage, contributing to several Off-Broadway shows and national tours.
