We Binged Amazon Prime’s On Call – Here’s Our Thoughts

Amazon Prime’s new TV show On Call arrived on the platform last week (Thursday, January 9, 2025), and it’s redefining the police drama genre with an innovative storytelling approach. Created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, this new series from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television stands out among the plethora of crime shows. With that being said, we couldn’t resist binging it over the weekend. Here’s what we think makes On Call a must-watch.

Body Cam Footage Brings Realism

What sets On Call apart is its use of body cam footage to tell the story. This unique perspective pulls viewers into the action, offering an unfiltered look at the raw, chaotic world of police work. The episodes feel authentic, portraying high-stakes moments with visceral intensity. Unlike other crime series, On Call captures the small, human moments alongside the big drama, delivering an emotional punch while keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. It delves into how the calls affect the officers both during and after their shifts. Hollywood.com’s editor (who binged the series) found it refreshingly unique compared to previous shows. It dives into the nitty-gritty, showing officers rushing from one high-stakes call to another without time to process the last. The show provides a look at what a shift as an on duty police officer could handle at any moment.

Bite-Sized Episodes, Big Impact

Each episode of On Call clocks in at just 30 minutes, making it perfect for those who want quick but satisfying storytelling. The concise format ensures that every scene is impactful, with no filler. The pacing is sharp, and the tension builds effortlessly, making it almost impossible not to hit “next episode.” It also allows for quick viewing when you often don’t have enough time in your day for a full hour episode of TV.

Stellar Cast Shines Bright

The cast of On Call helps to elevate the show. With big name actors as well as newer names, the show compiled a cast worth watching and paying attention to. Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars) is compelling as a dedicated officer balancing personal and professional challenges. Brandon Larracuente (13 Reasons Why) and Eriq La Salle (ER) bring depth to their characters, while Rich Ting (Warrior), Rich Ceraulo Ko, and Crispin Alapag add complexity to the ensemble. Mac Brandt’s grounded performance is a standout, further enriching the show’s emotional layers, and adding in Lori Laughlin (Full House) to the show was a delightfully unexpected pick.

Final Thoughts

On Call is a fresh take on the crime-action genre, blending gripping storytelling, innovative visuals, and a talented cast. If you’re a fan of police dramas or looking for a new binge-worthy series, On Call on Amazon Prime Video should be at the top of your list.
