Breaking its controversial silence on the case, the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather Wednesday night reported that FBI officials, unhappy with Washington D.C. police’s focus on Congressman Gary Condit, have assigned the investigation into the disappearance of Chandra Levy to their own Cold Case unit. Speaking to the Washington Post prior to the broadcast, Rather said that the report was “solidly sourced” and “a result of our own original reporting.” He added: “We said that we were going to err on the side of restraint, not on the side of taking part in a feeding frenzy, which often leads to the kind of reporting you later regret.”
