Reacting to the furor created over a joke, during which he said a Colombian beauty queen’s top talent was swallowing bags of heroin, David Letterman promised Miss Colombia Andrea Noceti that he would never jest about Colombia and drugs again. Letterman cracked the joke during his May 11 talk show, but he quickly realized his error when the Colombian community rose their voices in protest. He invited Noceti on his show, on which he apologized to her, saying, “I think I’ve learned my lesson.” She told Letterman, “You joke about what you shouldn’t joke [about], but you are a nice man.” Noceti competed May 11 in the Miss Universe competition, but lost to Miss Puerto Rico.
