NEWSMAKERS: Award for Douglas

Big-screen veteran Kirk Douglas has been named the winner of this year’s Milestone Award by the Producers Guild of America, Daily Variety reports.

The annual award is given to an individual who has made major contributions to the entertainment industry. Douglas will receive the award March 3 during the organization’s 12th Annual Golden Laurel Awards.

Other recipients of the award include Bob Hope, Jack Warner, Irving Berlin and Paramount Picture boss Sherry Lansing.

DEATH OF A SCREENWRITER: Police are treating the Christmas Eve shooting death of screenwriter and author Susan Berman as a homicide, Variety reports. Berman was found dead by neighbors in her West Los Angeles home with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Berman, 55, was also a novelist best known as the daughter of Las Vegas mobster David Berman, the business partner of gangster Bugsy Siegel, who took over the Flamingo Hotel after Siegel was murdered. She also wrote her memoirs of growing up a Mafia princess in “Easy Street” and “Lady Las Vegas.”

Berman reportedly had projects in the works that were tied to her Mafia past.
