ROLE CALL: Sarandon Sees Red

Susan Sarandon is seeing red.

According to Daily Variety, the actress is in talks to star in a film called “Rialto,” an indie flick which uses the 1950s “Red Scare” as its backdrop.

Sarandon, an Oscar winner for “Dead Man Walking,” would play a mysterious proprietor of an arthouse theater in Rhode Island whose affair with a young Korean War veteran makes her the target of a Communist witch hunt.

TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN: Character actor Philip Seymour Hoffman is a busy man. Along with two other feature-length projects in the making, the “Magnolia,” “Fearless” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley” co-star will add “Owning Molony” to his plate of work to do, Variety says.

In “Molony,” Hoffman will play a banker who has embezzled a ton of dough to feed his gambling addiction.

DOING THE CAT WALK: Can’t get enough of Rosie O’Donnell? Well, wait until January of next year.

The Associated Press is reporting that the talk show hostess is going to join the Broadway musical “Seussical.” O’Donnell will play a cat (as in the Cat in the Hat) beginning Jan. 16 for six weeks.
