Baldwin asks Bush to block legislation

Actor William Baldwin, president of pressure group The Creative Coalition, has appealed to President Bush to block a new legislation aimed at regulating film advertising, Reuters reports. According to Baldwin, the proposed law would give the government too much power.

The Media Marketing Accountability Act, which was proposed by Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), would make Hollywood more accountable for the influence that violent films have on children.

The bill would give the Federal Trade Commission limited authority to pursue the industry for violations. It also would prevent entertainment companies from marketing directly to minors.

The Creative Coalition believes the bill violates rights to free speech. In a statement to Variety Baldwin said the government should not have the power to police the marketing of creative material.

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) also supports the bill.
