Warner Bros. will soon learn how rampant video piracy in Asia will
affect the box office there for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s
Stone.
The BBC reported Monday that bootleg copies of the movie are
selling fast in Macau and Hong Kong, where Potter opens on Dec.
20.
“Business is great — we sold over 50 VCDs [Video Compact Discs] in
just an hour last night after we got copies from an agent in Hong Kong,”
a Macau vendor told the BBC.

Meanwhile, official results confirmed
Monday that Potter smashed box office records in Japan over the
weekend as it earned $12.7 million in its first two days of release,
beating the previous record-holder, Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom
Menace, by about $750,000.
