Emmy Awards rescheduled

The 53rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards have been rescheduled for Oct. 7, Emmy organizers told Reuters on Friday. The new date is three weeks later than the original date of Sept. 16. The Emmys were canceled due to this week’s devastating terrorist attacks.

Jim Chabin, president of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, released a statement saying that the Emmys were being put on hold “out of respect for the victims, their families and our fellow citizens.”

“Traditionally, the Emmys are a tribute to the television industry; however, on this night the industry will also join together with the nation to reaffirm the spirit of the American people,” the statement said.

The only other time the Emmys were held up by world events was in 1978, when the ceremony was delayed by about 30 minutes by the announcement of the 1978 Camp David Accords by then-President Jimmy Carter, according to a spokesman for the television academy.

The Emmys will be broadcast on CBS from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, Oct. 7.
