Martin Scorsese‘s Gangs of New York, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis, which was to have been Miramax’s Oscar contender, may not be released at all this year, the studio indicated Tuesday.
Set in New York during the 1860s, the film reportedly contains numerous scenes of violence. The studio reportedly decided to delay the release because it deemed the content to be inappropriate following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. However, DiCaprio is said to be highly critical of the film and some analysts have indicated that Scorsese was seeking a postponement of the release so that he could alter some of the scenes and add new ones.
