Indian Film Festival shut down

India has been forced to cancel the 32nd International Film Festival of
India, scheduled to open on Oct. 10 in Bangalore, after the Karnataka state
government requested the shut-down due to draught, the Times of India
reported today.

A spokesman for the country’s Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting expressed dismay at the Karnataka request,
noting that it was received just two weeks prior to the scheduled opening of
the festival and after nearly 100 films had been received from overseas for
the event.

“If drought was the reason, then they could have informed us
about that much earlier,” an unnamed ministry spokesman told the newspaper.
The festival had been expected to attract numerous high-profile filmmakers
from all over the world.
