Like a black fly in your Chardonay

It’s a real-life mystery that remains unsolved.

Bryan Edwin Smith, the driver who last year severely injured author Stephen King, was found dead in his home in Fryeburg, Maine, The Associated Press reports.

Police on Friday entered Smith’s mobile home and found him dead in his bed, according to the AP. Officials said that the 43-year-old disabled construction worker hadn’t been heard from for three days before his brother requested that authorities check on him.

The cause of death is unknown.

Smith pleaded guilty in January to a misdemeanor driving-to-endanger charge in the June 1999 accident that left King with broken ribs and bones, a skull laceration and a punctured lung.

Smith told police that he had accidentally swerved into King while trying to control his dog, which was loose in Smith’s vehicle.

An autopsy is schedule for today, and a graveside service for Smith is planned for Tuesday.
