Boozoo Chavis, one of the creators of the popular Louisiana Creole music known as Zydeco, died on Saturday of a heart attack and stroke. He was 70. Also known as “The Creole Cowboy,” his first record, 1954’s “Paper in My Shoe,” is considered Zydeco’s first popular record, with the simple, idiosyncratic sound of Chavis’ fact-action accordion, accompanied by his gritty singing style. Chavis, who was characterized by his white Stetson hat, was an inspiration to many generations of Zydeco artists, who have enhanced upon his style and added musical sophistication. He is survived by six children, 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
