Famed Polish director Andrzej Wajda, who won an honorary Oscar last year
“for showing both the loftiest heights and the darkest depths of the
European soul.” is planning to open his own film school in Warsaw next
March, the Warsaw daily Zycie reported.
“We won’t be
occupied with theory,” Wajda told the newspaper. “We want to develop the
practical side [of the profession], that one can learn only with working
with actors, practice and exercises.”
Although courses are to be taught in
both Polish and English, Wajda indicated that his aim was not to emulate
Hollywood. “We want to create a European, world cinema,” he said. However,
he added, “Creating ties between the East and West is a mission to
accomplish.”
