Rachel to be a single mom–and no one objects

Rachel’s decision on Friends
to go it alone as a single mom has drawn virtually no criticism from
conservative religious groups — in marked contrast to Murphy Brown’s
similar decision a decade ago, the Los Angeles Times observed
today.

Moreover, the newspaper noted, there are single mothers
by choice on ABC, the WB and HBO as well, a reflection of the growing
numbers of well-educated women with disposable income who now make up
the television audience and who are a desirable target of advertisers.

L. Brent Bozell, who heads the TV watchdog group Parents Television
Council, told the Times that his group has more urgent issues to
deal with, including “graphic and gratuitous violence on television, the
sheer promiscuity of sex, the raunchy language.”
