ROLE CALL: Adam Sandler’s Non-Specific Specifics

It doesn’t get any less specific than this: Adam Sandler is set to star in an untitled, unwritten, uncast romantic comedy for New Line Cinema. While the movie sounds barely formed, today’s Daily Variety assures us that it will “take [Sandler] in the direction he has been headed toward with ‘The Wedding Singer‘ and ‘Big Daddy.’ ”

Meaning it’ll make him a lot of money?

COWBOYS AND COWGIRL: Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton and Cate Blanchett are locked in for “Outlaws,” a romantic comedy about Old West bank robbers and the women they love. According to Variety, it’s being called a “contemporary ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ ” because calling it a “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” rip-off wouldn’t be nice.

MORE WHOOPI NEWS! The Oscar-winning actress, who before becoming a TV-land center square, once acted in movies (some of them good), is in final talks to star in “Kingdom Come,” a comedy-drama co-starring LL Cool J and Don Cheadle, per an item in today’s Variety.

LAST REFUGE? Director David Lynch (“The Straight Story“), whose recent films haven’t exactly put peoples’ fannies in the seats, is moving to the Web, developing a series of computer-animated shorts called “Dumbland” for Shockwave.com (www.shockwave.com). They’ll debut on the site in June.
