Analysts have detected a significant slowdown in ticket sales for
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, leading many to conclude
that it won’t hit $200 million until this weekend, at least 15 days
after its premiere.
Days after its release, many of the same analysts
were forecasting that the film was likely to reach that mark in 10 days,
tying the record set by Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.
Today’s Wall Street Journal quoted Warner Bros. insiders
as saying that there’s a “slight chance” that the film could be knocked
out of the top spot at the box office by 20th Century Fox’s Behind
Enemy Lines this weekend. If not, the Journal
added, “it surely will fall next Friday to Ocean’s Eleven.”
