Creeping up out of nowhere and presumably surprising the bejeepers out of analysts, MGM’s Jeepers Creepers easily set a record for the Labor Day holiday by taking in $15.8 million at the box office. Universal’s American Pie 2, which many analysts had expected would extend its stay at the top of the list, instead dropped to third place, with $11 million. Rush Hour 2 from New Line, rose from third to second place with $11.7 million and is now just shy of the $200-million mark with $198.9 million. The debut of Lions Gate’s O (on fewer than half the number of screens of Creepers) landed in seventh place at the box office with $6.9 million.
