Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen are bringing a musical version of 10 Things I Hate About You to Broadway.
The stage adaptation of the beloved 1999 teen romantic comedy will begin preview performances on Aug. 17, 2027, marking the Broadway debut of the new musical. Details about the theater, opening night and cast have not yet been announced.
Dunham is co-writing the musical’s book with Jessica Huang, while Jepsen is creating the music and lyrics alongside Ethan Gruska. Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon is set to direct and choreograph the production, with Tom Kitt handling music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations. Mike Bosner will produce.
The musical is based on the hit film starring Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, the story follows sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford as they navigate high school, romance and their strict father’s dating rules.
The Broadway production promises a fresh take on the familiar story, focusing on themes of growing up, self-discovery and challenging expectations.
With Lena Dunham leading the adaptation and Carly Rae Jepsen crafting the score, the musical is poised to give the cult-classic movie a new life on the Broadway stage.
